We are reaching our 4th week of remote learning and it has been fantastic. Our students have been accustomed with their academic responsibilities and they are keeping up the good job. Thank you all for keeping your spirits up.

Tip of the week: If sunny, get close to your window or terrace and let photosynthesis do the work 🙂

Please join in for the CDL Act of Solidarity this weekend.

This weekend (4-5th April) we are inviting all of the CDL community to join us in a positive act of solidarity. We’re asking all students, parents and teaching and boarding staff from pre-school to high school to spend a moment to come together to connect us all… virtually!

Great!What would you like us to do? First, take a moment to consider something or someone that has provided humour, joy, positivity, support or strength during your journey during isolation and remote learning. Perhaps your favourite desk top lucky charm, the view from your new ‘classroom’ window or maybe your family pet!

What do I do next? Take a photo on your phone, if you are a younger student ask a parent to help you then email it to us.

When do you need my photo? Please submit your photos to us by Wednesday 8thApril to virtual@cdl.ch

We will then compile all the photos together to create a digital mosaic which will be shown in a future blog. We know that we are stronger together, so please support this message and join us by submitting your photo to bring about more inspiration, positivity and smiles.

Week 3 online learning :-)

Dear all,

Today we are starting our 3rd week of remote learning, and I am sure that everyone has been accustomed with what needs to be done. I would like to thank all the girls who have responded with great maturity and responsibility for their studies. I would also like to thank all teachers who have done a tremendous work to make sure that our students get the best education.

Tip of the week: Find fun things to do at home – put music that you like and dance or sing 

 

Week 2 online learning :-)

Dear all, a week has passed and it has been a new and challenging experience for everyone. I am happy that with our daily contact with students, our collaboration with teachers and with the support of CdL community, we managed to enable this new venture. Let’s continue with motivation and energy for this 2nd week of remote learning.

Dear parents and students. Since the start of this week we have  been going through a big challenge. Everyone is back to their homes and  since Tuesday, students started the online distance learning experience. It must have been overwhelming for some, but if we try to have a fix daily schedule we can all manage to go through these times. Every  Saturday Ecureuil  parents are going to receive an email from Ecureuil House Parents in order to get information about how the week went.

Wellbeing: Addiction and its’ dangers

Tonight’s conversation was about addiction and the way it works for ourselves. The girls expressed their concerns about phone addiction and food addiction and expressed ways to manage it. Addiction starts with feelings, it is a sickness and it can be treated. We just need to recognize when there is a loss of control over our lives and to be able to talk about it.

What Are Substance Abuse and Addiction?

The difference between substance abuse and addiction is very slight. Substance abuse means using an illegal substance or using a legal substance in the wrong way. Addiction begins as abuse, or using a substance like marijuana or cocaine.

You can abuse a drug (or alcohol) without having an addiction. For example, just because Sara smoked pot a few times doesn’t mean that she has an addiction, but it does mean that she’s abusing a drug — and that could lead to an addiction.

People can get addicted to all sorts of substances. When we think of addiction, we usually think of alcohol or illegal drugs. But people become addicted to medicines, cigarettes, vaping.

Addiction means a person has no control over whether he or she uses a drug or drinks. Someone who’s addicted to cocaine has grown so used to the drug that he or she has to have it. Addiction can be physical, psychological, or both.

Signs of Addiction

The most obvious sign of an addiction is the need to have a particular drug or substance. However, many other signs can suggest a possible addiction, such as changes in mood or weight loss or gain. (These also are signs of other conditions too, though, such as depression or eating disorders.)

Signs that you or someone you know may have a drug or alcohol addiction include:

Psychological signals:

  • use of drugs or alcohol as a way to forget problems or to relax
  • withdrawal or keeping secrets from family and friends
  • loss of interest in activities that used to be important
  • problems with schoolwork, such as slipping grades or absences
  • changes in friendships, such as hanging out only with friends who use drugs
  • spending a lot of time figuring out how to get drugs
  • stealing or selling belongings to be able to afford drugs
  • failed attempts to stop taking drugs or drinking
  • anxiety, anger, or depression
  • mood swings

Physical signals:

  • changes in sleeping habits
  • feeling shaky or sick when trying to stop
  • needing to take more of the substance to get the same effect
  • changes in eating habits, including weight loss or gain

Getting Help

If you think that you or someone you care about is addicted to drugs or alcohol, recognizing the problem is the first step in getting help.

Many people think they can kick the problem on their own, but that rarely works. Find someone you trust to talk to. It may help to talk to a friend or someone your own age at first, but a supportive and understanding adult is your best option for getting help. If you can’t talk to your parents, you might want to approach a school counselor, relative, doctor, favorite teacher.

Helping a Friend With Addiction

If you’re worried about a friend who has an addiction, you can use these tips to help him or her. For example, let your friend know that you are available to talk or offer your support. If you notice a friend backsliding, talk about it openly and ask what you can do to help.

If your friend is going back to drugs or drinking and won’t accept your help, don’t be afraid to talk to a nonthreatening, understanding adult, like your parent or school counselor. It may seem like you’re ratting your friend out, but it’s the best support you can offer.

Above all, offer a friend who’s battling an addiction lots of encouragement and praise. It may seem corny, but hearing that you care is just the kind of motivation your friend needs.

 

Wellbeing: what learner am I and do I have clear academic goals?

During our session we figured out through some questions about the type of learner that we are. Most of the girls are visual learners which means that their language memory is better when it appears  in a form of a text, pictures graphs and video clips. However sometimes it is possible to combine visuals stimulus with sounds and voices in order to absorb information within class. In any case, I was pleased to see that the girls can recognize how it is better for them to understand and remember their study materials.

The academic goals are connected with getting good results, succeeding in IB, getting high honors, improving their GPA and ultimately get into their best choice University.  In order to reach our goals, we need to have a structured and consistent plan and stick to this plan. Inner discipline is also a big factor, within reasonable frames. Be positive, be specific,  set your goals high enough to be challenging but reasonable enough to achieve. State your goals in writing and keep them out where you can see to remind and motivate you. Telling others about your goals can also help. Just remember that:

  • You set a ‘road map’ for where you want to go.
  • You are able to select the most appropriate method for reaching your goal.
  • You are able to more easily gauge your progress toward your goal.
  • You are able to make adjustments to your goal and methods as needed.
  • You know when you have reached your goal and can appreciate your accomplishment.
