Tim Burnell’s Insight

Taking part in the international award has taught me a great deal of things. For instance before taking part in the programme I had no idea how to read a map whatsoever; orienteering was a befuddling mess from my point of view, only to be used by explorers and the army. Fortunately I learned in time for the journey and I thank the international award for teaching me that.

Map reading aside I believe that the most important thing I have learned on this experience was the teamwork that we picked up. Two 20km+ hikes in the company of six other people really teaches you how to get on with people over the course of a strenuous task. We had our arguments but I like to believe that it bonded us in the long term.

So, what did I have to enjoy specifically? Well there was a back-achingly heavy rucksack to carry for over 20km, rain for the larger part of a day and sore limbs for the whole thing. But aside from all that there was that true and never-ending sense of companionship throughout driving us all on. So on the whole it was a positive experience.
