WordPress Plugins

EduBlogs is based on WordPress, a CMS that can be expanded with Plugins. To enhance your blog select at least two new plugins per category:

Appearance
Education
Forms & Surveys
Media
Posts & Pages
Social
Widgets

Once the plugins are activated you will have to use them in a new post (or posts if you can’t use all plugins in one post) describing the functionnality and embedding an example of use. Each post must include as title the plugin name and category.

Widgets and Tags

Your sidebar entries are the default ones from Edublogs. Widgets (in the appearance settings) let you change and personalize the side bar. Use the widgets to have a sidebar with at least all the widgets that are already there and two new features.

Don’t forget to add the corresponding tag to all your posts!

Blog Tagline and Top bar Menu

To complete your Blog header, update the blog tagline with a text of your choice, but leave the title as is. Also, you will remove the “sample page” and “blog listing” links and add a new menu with a link to all other class blogs and the “Computer Application 2015” one on top.

Look at the class blog to see this menu in action that will give you a quick link to all others blog. You can also complete this menu with links to pages of your choice.

Work category

In order for me to quickly spot your posts related to the homework you have to do for class, please do the two following tasks:

1. Create a new category named “Work” and check all posts related to work as it.

2. Add the widget “Categories” so that I can click on the Work link.

Make a comment

Commenting is a very important aspect of blogging, it shows the writer that people are actually reading his/her posts and it also is the way for readers to share their point of view. Each of you must comment on one of everyone elses post in the class and on the general look of their blog so far.

Read the page “Writing Quality Comments”:

Blog appearance and theme

You can modify the theme of your blog, and before applying it, you can have a preview. Try some themes, and pick one that you like. If the one you chose at the beginning of class suits you, you can keep it.

I simply need categories to show up correctly and blog posts. The top bar must display correctly with the menu and the background.

If your blog theme does not display those widgets/menus/bar correctly you have to pick another one.

Creating a Header for the blog

You have to create a new header for the Computer Graphics blog.

These simple instructions will help you in creating a banner for your personal blog.

You will have to create an image in Photoshop with dimensions of pixels matching the header picture on your template.

There are several ways you could complete this exercise – for example using photoshop at school, alternatively you can use any online tool you can find. A simple search for header/banner creation online will show you any number of free online tools you could use.

Your banner/header should be completed next week.

You should include:

The words:

Blog
CDL/Collège du Léman (Logo)
Computer Application

Appropriate images, good use of colours correct size. Once your header is complete you should create a new post with your header included in it.

Create a post on your new header, then each of you will comment on everyone elses work – comments should be inline with ‘Writing Quality Comments’ guidelines.
