The BLACKSWAN Foundation

This weekend our Léman 1 House Captain, Daniel LOZAKOVICH will be holding a concert in the Victoria Hall Geneva.

This will be a charity concert in aid of The BLACKSWAN foundation.

“Rare diseases affect 6% to 8% of the world population and approximately 500,000 people in Switzerland. The majority of these conditions affect children and in three out of four cases have a fatal outcome. The quest for specific drugs is a priority, especially as the effectiveness of certain rare disease drugs has been demonstrated in the treatment of most common diseases.

The BLACKSWAN Foundation was established in Switzerland in 2010 to contribute to the development of research on rare and orphan diseases worldwide. The Foundation supports research on all different types of rare and orphan disease, which makes its vision unique and helps in finding new solutions that can assist a large variety of projects”

Daniel Lozakovich

We are very excited about this weekends concert by Daniel.

Daniel is our current House Captain in Léman 1. He is a very charismatic and sociable young man who has made vast accomplishments in the music world. As he is Grade 12 he will be leaving us this year. This concert will be a nice way for Daniel to say goodbye to Collège du Léman and an opportunity for the school community to see his talent in action.

Photo Competition

Last month we had another House Competition.

It was to take a photograph with the theme of demonstrating Values.

The boys had many ideas and we spent lots of time in our House Meeting trying to think of a way to show this in one photograph, without explanation needed.

  • We knew that we wanted to have all of our boys participating to show solidarity, friendship and family.
  • We wanted to all wear our House Hoodies to show teamwork, membership and belonging.
  • We wanted to show what we thought where important values to have, of Honesty, Respect, Empathy and Humbleness.
  • We wanted to show how these values come together, become a part of each other to create a bigger picture (like a jigsaw) and demonstrate the values we want to see at CDL.
  • We then decided to edit the photo into black and white to demonstrate humbleness and that the focus of the picture was not us, but on the values shown.

Time was then spent finding cardboard, cutting out the jigsaw pieces, drawing and then painting them. This was our entry.

Well done to the boys and their hard work as we placed 3rd.

International Dinner- Indian

Every Tuesday we are fortunate to experience the culinary delights of a new country.

This week it was India which was a delight for all. We have one student from India in Léman 1, who said “It was a bit like home, but it was a lot less spicy…….. but it was nice of them to make the effort”

Mays Topic- Goal setting

Each Wednesday we have our House Meeting. This is a time in which the whole house comes together and we share the announcements for the week and the achievements of the week. We also then follow a pastoral programme in which a topic of the month is chosen.

This months topic will be Goal Setting.

World Malaria Day

“Globally, the world has made incredible progress against malaria. But we are still too far from the end point we seek: a world free of malaria. Every year, the global tally of new malaria cases exceeds 200 million. And every 2 minutes, a child dies from this preventable and treatable disease. The damage inflicted extends far beyond loss of life: malaria takes a heavy toll on health systems, sapping productivity and eroding economic growth. Ultimately, investing in universal health care is the best way to ensure that all communities have access to the services they need to beat malaria. Individual and community empowerment through grassroots initiatives like “Zero malaria starts with me” can also play a critical role in driving progress.”

Epic Boarding Concert

On the 2nd April Leman 1 organised a Boarding Concert in aid of the Tomas Costa Appeal.

It was a great night which raised a significant amount of money for the cause.

Our thanks go out to the performers;

and also to all those who attended and gave so generously.

We ended the concert with a Charity Auction which exceeded our expectations.

Happy Nowruz

This week it was the Persian New Year. To celebrate this the students were treated to a lovely meal last night in Geneva. Everyone reported enjoying the food, company and atmosphere.

In addition, the rest of the Boarding Community were able to taste Iranian food during our weekly Tuesday International Cusine. It was very nice to try such food and to celebrate with friends.

Pumpkin Carving

This week in celebration of Halloween we had our annual pumpkin carving competition.

Javier and Sergio represented the House and did us proud producing the best pumpkin on display (in our opinion).

House Competition- Quiz

We had our second House Competition last week which was a Quiz. We had to send three representatives from Leman 1 to do their best at answering the general knowledge questions.

We had Leo, David and Dmitry volunteer.

There were strict rules and separation to ensure everything was fair.

But we are very pleased to announce that we came 1st out of 13 Houses!!

Doing things for others

One of the most precious things we have is time. We all only have a limited amount of time and once we lose it we can not get it back. Therefore, giving someone your time is one of the biggest privileges we can give to someone.

When we think of charity or helping people, many people are generous in giving money which of course in certain circumstances is a vital aid. However, for things which money can not help, the most valuable thing we can give is our time.

Over this month we have seen lots of examples of this within the Boarding House. People giving their time to help others. Some examples of this where; students joining the annual Lake Clean-Up, students helping others with their homework, or teaching other to iron, or carrying the fruits to the Houses, building furniture, cleaning the kitchen. Sometimes its just as simple as spending time with someone else, inviting them to join in a game, sharing food or showing an interest in someone else’s interests.

Well done to the Leman 1 boys.

Curiosity Cabinet

Over the year’s students have donated small mementos from their country or things they have created. These items have accumulated over the years and adorned our shelves in the office. Items which remind us of past students or nice creations which they have made. This year we decided to make this more of a focus and created a Curiosity Cabinet.

House Representatives

We are proud to announce our new Committee members and House Reps.

They will be the voice of the students of Leman 1.

We trust these boys will do a good job and bring lots of fresh ideas to the Boarding Community.

First Weekend

It has been an amazing start to the term with a great atmosphere in the House. It is nice to see returning students helping and supporting new students and also older students engaging with younger students. The Boarding House is really starting to bond well into the family we wish to be.

This weekend we had a multitude of activities on offer. This included; tennis, wakeboarding, kayaking, tennis, biking, horse riding, volleyball, sailing, golf and a trip to Geneva.

Welcome from Leman 1

Dear Friends

Thank you for visiting our blog. This is where we will share with you special moments that we have throughout the year.

Along with our aim of helping our students achieve academically, we believe much more is gained through the experience of Boarding. Gently we will try to guide them to become more independent, conscious, aware and to embody the spirit of Respect, Internationalism, team Spirit and Excellence that are at the core of our Guiding Principles R.I.S.E. at Collège du Léman.

We aim to ensure our students have fun, new experiences, work hard and have smiles on their faces. We are looking forward to the year ahead.

We welcome you to please subscribe so you will be notified when we update and also please feel free to comment.

End of Year Event

On Sunday 10th we had our End of Year Event to celebrate our time together this year. We all came together in Concha for an afternoon of fun filled games and activities. There was inflatable football, a foam party, the pool, sand volleyball, inflatable boxing, ice cream, an inflatable basketball challenge, virtual formula 1 racing, a kebab stand and much more.

Fun Filled Week

It has been another fun filled week of activities. We have had our normal offering of golf, tennis, wakeboarding, horse riding, crossfit, book club, art workshop, kayaking and biking. The last two Sunday activities have also been very exciting, we had the opportunity to go to a High Ropes course and Paragliding!

Beady Bugs

The Art Workshop is a popular activity in Leman 1. We have a number of boys who regularly go each week to let out their creative side and gain some REACH hours. Here are their creations this week.

Well Done to Daniel

We are very proud that our very own Daniel has just released his first debut album with Deutsche Grammophon.

“In his debut album for Deutsche Grammophon, Daniel Lozakovich presents Bach’s two violin concertos in collaboration with the Kammerorchester des Symphonieorchesters des Bayerischen Rundfunks together with the solo Partita No. 2, which includes the famous Chaconne.”

My Trip to Luzern

A Trip to Luzern

On the 11th of May me and a handful of students embarked on a trip to Luzern, a city situated North East from Geneva and East from Bern. We left school rather early in the morning by my standards (08:00) on a bus. To be honest one of my favourite parts of the day was the bus ride to and from Luzern. After all, what’s not to like? You’re pampered with many different views without having to break a sweat. That’s the thing I like about road trips; you can indulge yourself with the sights ahead in the comfort of a cushioned seat with air conditioning. What’s not to like?

After about 2 and a half hours (10:30-45ish) we arrived in the city. It was quite packed to say the least. There were people bustling around squares and patrolling the pavements. From formal businessmen and women to families with prams full of young’uns, it seemed extremely diverse to myself. Our destination was a museum; a transport museum. Upon arrival I decided to walk around aimlessly for a bit just to familiarize myself with the surroundings. When I had fooled around enough I decided to visit a section of the building called the “Media World”. It was an area where we were free to try on virtual reality headsets, use greenscreens, 360 degree cameras and much much more. My favourite part of the exhibit was the VR racing simulator. It’s exactly what it sounds like, you don a VR headset, hop into the driver’s seat and you’re off to the races, literally. I shan’t lie. I wasn’t as adept a racer as I thought I would be. I’m fairly certain after watching me drive that car no one would get into a car with me at the wheel.
It took me a while to realize but I hadn’t actually seen any forms of transport aside from that virtual car. So I headed back downstairs and found the entrance to what we actually came here for: the transport museum. It was quite the experience. From little, single carriages on tracks that were horse drawn to iron behemoths that once brought people and goods from far and wide, the display was very impressive and most importantly, diverse. I caught sight of a large model mountain that was riddled with tunnels and train tracks that burrowed in and out of the rocky outcrops. I’m glad to say that I managed to see them turn on the display and get the chance to see several little trains whizzing around the mountain side. By this time we had to be going for lunch.
Myself and 3 houseparents ended setting up shop on a lawn beside the lake. It struck me there, that it seems this lake really did connect all of the places I’ve been to. From Montreux to Geneva to here in Luzern. I ended up eating a fraction of my lunch and feeding another bit to a couple- a duck couple (might have been mallards, I’m not familiar with waterfowl). When I was finished I took a 20 minute walk round the lake with houseparent Eric. We had a nice conversation (mostly about travelling etc.) and then we turned around and headed back the way we came. By then it was time to head back to school and enjoy the ride back while. There’s still quite a bit to say about that trip but long pieces of texts seem intimidating so I’ll just end it here.
